Description

Structural reliability analysis is a well-known framework for assessing the safety of structures located in various environments, particularly marine and ocean environments. Steel structures in these severe conditions are typically prone to deterioration due to corrosion processes. This latter will diminish the strength of the structure, and failures may occur if not carefully foreseen. This research introduces a theoretical approach and data requirements for engineering structural reliability evaluation suitable for estimating the safety and reliability of marine constructions. An example is provided to demonstrate the application of structural reliability analysis to degraded offshore structures. The results are expressed in terms of failure probability, demonstrating the significance of the analysis outcome to the concerned industry as well as the need of applying sophisticated methodologies to model degradation, such as machine learning, for corrosion prediction.
