Description
During an impact, a load interacts with a structure during the time interval td. Depending on the impact characteristics and the load rise time, tr, the amplification of the load can be found as a function of the parameters: td/t and tr/T where T is the eigenfrequency of the structure. The paper will investigate different impact characteristics and summarize the amplification due to impact loading in a one-degree-of-freedom system. The near static case, where the impact rise time is long, will give minimal amplification, while a rapid impact will result in an amplification factor closer to 2. Practical examples from snap-loading in a wire, explosions, and collisions will be discussed.
